Susannah Mitchell was born in November 1804 I Alleghany County, Pennslyvania to Amos Mitchell and Mary “Polly” Hillman. She married Gideon Drake on 30 October 1822 in Brown County, Ohio.

Gideon Drake and Susannah had at least ten children.

Josiah Drake (1824-1915) who married Eva Jane Whitenack. I wrote a blog just on these two.

Amos Drake was born in 1826 in Johnson County. He married Martha Brian about 1846. They had at least four children. Amos died in 1914 and is buried in Brian Cemetery in Martinsville, Indiana.

She is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Johnson County, Indiana. Hiram then married Clara Armstrong in October 1860 in Johnson County, Indian.  They had one son, William Edgar Drake. In 1892 I believe Hiram then married Mary Ballenger Hann. Hiram died about 1903.

Polly Drake was born about 1832. I know nothing else about her.

John Drake may have been a twin of Polly. He was also born about 1832. He married Mary Jane Parks about 1858 and they had at least six children. John died in 1896 in Greensburg, Indiana and is buried in South Park Cemetery, Decatur County, Indiana.

Wesley Drake was born I January 1834 in Indiana. Wesley married Margaret Fitzpatrick in May 1859 in Johnson County, Indiana. She died soon thereafter; perhaps during childbirth. He married Susan McClain about 1861 in Indiana and they had at least three children. Wesley died in 1907 in Franklin, Indiana.

Permelia was born in 1836 in Indiana. She married Christopher Columbus Burns in December 1854 in Johnson County, Indiana. I don’t believe they had any children.

Charlotte Drake was born in January 1838 in Indiana. She married John Ballard in January 1859, probably in Indiana. They had at least four children. Charlotte died in 1913 in Franklin, Indiana, and she is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Indiana.

Joseph Drake was born in May 1840 in Johnson County, Indiana. Me married Melissa Doble about 1861. They had at least two children. Joseph died I 1915 and is buried in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Indiana.

Gideon Drake was born in 1845 in Indiana. I believe he married three times. Sarah M. Ralston about 1872 and Mary E. Moore about 1880 are two. He may have married Alice, last name and date unknown. I believe that Gideon had at least five children from the three wives. He died sometime after 1880, probably in Indiana.

Susannah died about 1895 in Indiana.

52 Ancestors - #40 - Josiah Drake (1824 OH - 1915 IN)

Josiah Drake was born in May 1824 in Brown County, Ohio.  His parents were Gideon Drake and Susannah Mitchell.  He and his family moved to Indiana before 1845 because he married Eva Jane Whitenack [Whiteneck] in June 1845 in Union, Johnson County, Indiana.

Josiah served in Co I, 70th Infantry Regiment, Indiana, during the Civil War, and had an invalid application number of 376214 in June 1880.

Josiah and Eva had seven children, although one, Robert, died in infancy.
William Gideon Drake (1846 – aft 2921) married a woman whose last name may have been Appleby.
Henry Drake (1848-1895) married, I believe, Katie Ryan.  I am looking for information about her because I may have a photograph of her and I would like to share this with her descendants.
Robert Marshall Drake (1850-1850)
Catherine Drake (1851-1921) married Rodman C. Coons.
Martha Ellen Drake (1853-aft 1921) married James N. Landsberry [ Lansberry] and I don’t believe they had any children.
Margaret Ann Drake (1860-1935) married Sheldon W. Griffin and I don’t believe they had any children.
Luna “Lena” Estelle Drake (1867-1938) married Charles Y. Trice.

Josiah died on 6 February 1915 in Johnson County, Indiana.  A very nice obituary is posted on FindAGrave for him, providing some great information about his life.

I would love to collaborate with you if you are interested in this family.
