52 Ancestors: #50 - Helen Trice Thorpe (1894 KS - 1978 MO)

Helen Trice was born in Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas on 22 December 1894. Her parents were Charles Yancy Trice and Luna “Lena” Estelle Drake. Her family moved numerous times, but she lived in Lamar about 1900 and then had moved back before 1930 and lived there the rest of her life.

Helen married Frank Cessford Thorpe on 21 February 1922 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Aunt Helen and Uncle Frank, as many residents of Lamar called them, had one daughter Ann Warden who was born in 1926 and then died in an auto accident in 1942.

Aunt Helen had a group of young ladies in Lamar called “Sub-Debs.” I don’t know anything about them, but would love to have information about this group.

During World War II Aunt Helen and Uncle Frank wrote a newsletter and sent it to servicemen from Lamar who were serving in various locations in the world. This newsletter, “Thorpe’s Tantalizing Tidbits,” kept all former residents informed about what was going on in Lamar. It also included news that each serviceman wrote to Aunt Helen and Uncle Frank so that information was distributed also. I now have a copy of these letters, and I intend to transcribe them and post them some time in the future. Since Aunt Helen was my grandmother’s sister, I feel that I am the closest relative to this family.

Helen Trice Thorpe died on 18 January 1978 in Lamar and was buried in Lake Cemetery in that town.

52 Ancestors: #46 - Eva Jane Whitenack (1822 KY -1893 IN)

Eva Jane Whitenack was born in November 1822 in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky.  She married Josiah Drake in 1845 in Johnson County, Indiana. 

Eva Jane and Josiah Drake had at least seven children.

William Gideon Drake was born in June 1846 in Indiana. I believe he married a woman whose last name was Appleby. I have not been able to discover her first name. William had at least two children: William Ward Drake born about 1875 and Elizabeth M. Drake born about 1876. William Gideon Drake died after 1921.

Henry Drake was born in January 1848 in Indiana. I believe he married Katie Ryan, sometime before 1880. They had three children. Henry died in April 1895 in Indiana and is buried in Crown Hill National Cemetery.

Robert Marshal Drake was born in January 1850 and died in October 1850, both in Indiana.

Catherine Drake was born in July 1851 in Indiana. She married Rodman Coons in December in Franklin, Indiana. I don’t believe that they had any children. Catherine died in February 1921 in Indiana and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Johnson County, Indiana.

Martha Ellen Drake was born in December 1853 in Indiana. She married James N. Landsberry in Johnson County, Indiana in 1882. I don’t know if they had any children. Martha died after 1921.

Margaret Ann Drake was born in December 1860 in Franklin, Indiana. She married Sheldon Griffin in 1881 in Johnson County, Indiana. I don’t believe they had any children. She died in 1935 in Wichita, Kansas.

Luna “Lena” Estelle Drake was born on 20 February 1867 in Franklin, Indiana. She married Charles Yancy Trice in January 1891. They had three daughters, one of whom died at age 10. Luna died in 1938 in Lamar, Barton County, Missouri and she is buried in Lake Cemetery, in Lamar.

Eva died on 29 June 1893 in Johnson County, Indiana and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, in Johnson County, Indiana.

52 Ancestors: #45 - Sarah Morrow Winstead (abt 1800 NC – bef 1846 KY)

Sarah Morrow was born about 1800 in North Carolina.  At this time her parents are unknown.  In Person County, North Carolina in September 1816 Sarah married William Winstead. 

I believe that William had four children.  They may have had more but I don’t know them at this time.

Alexander Taylor Winstead (1817 NC – 1887 KY) married Priscilla Ann Trice in 1838 and they had at least 8 children

Mary Ann Winstead (1821 NC – 1889 MO) married Charles Yancy Trice in 1841.  They had at least 14 children.

William H. Winstead (1825 NC – abt 1895 KY) married Alafar [numerous spellings] Hibbs about 1845.  I believe they had at least 9 children.

John Calvin Winstead (bef 1837 KY – after 1860 MO) married Roena.  No further information is known about this family.

Sarah died before 1846, probably in Kentucky.
